During my internship with the Houston Texas Mayor’s Office in the Department of Boards and Commissions, I had the invaluable opportunity to observe how effective leadership and collaboration drive progress. Working closely with the department director, her assistant, city council members, board members, and fellow interns provided me with priceless lessons that have profoundly shaped my understanding of professional growth and leadership dynamics. Additionally, my involvement in community events such as Girls Incorporated and the Hispanic Heritage Awards enriched my understanding of civic engagement and organizational dynamics. The following are fundamental lessons that shaped my perspective on leadership and professional development.

The Importance of Collaborative Leadership

One of the most striking aspects of my internship experience was observing the collaborative leadership style demonstrated by the director and her assistant. Similarly, contributing to the Hispanic Heritage Awards highlighted the significance of cultural celebration and representation. The event honored individuals who had made exceptional contributions to the Hispanic community in Houston. My role involved logistical support, ensuring that the event ran smoothly while upholding its spirit of inclusivity and recognition, as well as assisting with the creation of the proclamation awards. These experiences taught me that leadership extends beyond organizational settings, it is also about uplifting communities and creating spaces for diverse voices to be heard.
